The England head coach shared his disappointment that the England team did not enjoy greater encouragement from the Wembley spectators during their commanding triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
The manager was satisfied to see his side continue their winning momentum, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes deciding the game. Yet, he was displeased with the mood at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a drilled team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel remarked. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. There was little noise. There was no support from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the team earned greater backing today.”
“I stand by my words. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a bit more support in periods where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to recharge, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Apart from risking a dispute among supporters, the manager also created controversy by excluding Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. However the move was justified by Morgan Rogers delivering another standout performance in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his place.”
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a key qualifying match on Monday, improve after their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I wanted this match,” Bellamy commented. “I wanted to assess where we are. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me motivation.”
Watkins was taken off at the break after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team face their next opponents in Riga in a qualifier on Tuesday.
