The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
