Super Mario Galaxy Lives Up To the Hype

Growing up, I didn't have Nintendo's Wii system. Admittedly, I experienced Wii Sports plus various major releases during visits to relatives and companions back in that era, yet I lacked a Wii of my own, meaning I missed out on numerous outstanding titles within classic Nintendo game lines.

One of those games was Super Mario Galaxy, together with its follow-up, has been freshly updated then adapted for the Nintendo Switch. The original game also appeared in 2020’s limited-edition collection Super Mario 3D All-Stars. I embraced the possibility to try viewed by fans as a top-tier Mario titles in history. The game rapidly captivated me, and can definitely say it matches about 18 years of anticipation. That said, it’s also made me realize how glad I am motion-sensing features generally persisted as historical features.

The Cosmic Adventure Begins

Like any other Mario quest, Super Mario Galaxy begins with Bowser kidnapping Mario's royal friend along with her castle. His fleet of pirate-like space ships transport her among the stars, throwing Mario into the galaxy in the process. Mario encounters adorable stellar beings named Lumas and meets Rosalina aboard her comet ship. She charges Mario with collecting stellar objects to power the Observatory so they can chase after the antagonist, opening exploration opportunities to go exploring.

Super Mario Galaxy’s platforming offers pleasure, and all it took was playing through several stages to understand why it receives such praise. It’ll feel familiar among veterans of Mario's 3D adventures, and the mechanics remain accessible and natural following Nintendo's style.

Innovative Physics Mechanics

Being cosmic enthusiast, the setting is right up my alley, and it allows for Super Mario Galaxy to play with gravity. Orbital stages let Mario to circle repeatedly about them recalling Dragon Ball chasing after Bubbles in popular series. When structures approach, Mario can leap across and get snatched by the gravity of a nearby platform. Different stages feature flat circular shapes, frequently containing rewards underneath, where you may not think to look.

Meeting Familiar Faces

The pleasure in experiencing this game after nearly two decades involves recognizing some of its characters. I didn't realize Rosalina first appeared through this adventure, and that she became the adoptive mother to stellar beings. Prior to this experience, I only knew her as a standard member Mario Kart World character selection. Likewise for Penguins, alongside whom I enjoyed swimming in initial coastal stage.

Movement-Based Hurdles

The primary drawback while experiencing Galaxy currently are the motion controls, which are used for collecting, aiming, and shooting stellar fragments, bright collectibles distributed throughout stages. Using portable mode meant tilting and rotating the console for targeting, which feels a bit clunky. Movement features are prevalent in certain jumping segments, requiring players to direct the star-shaped cursor at surfaces to pull Mario in their direction.

Stages completely dependent on gyroscopic features work better when played with the Joy-Cons detached improving control, including the aquatic gliding mission during early game. I’ve never been enthusiastic about movement inputs, and they remain notably effectively throughout Galaxy. Fortunately, if you get enough stars through different stages, these movement-based stages can be wholly skipped. I tested the mission where Mario has to navigate a large sphere through a track dotted with holes, then quickly abandoned after initial effort.

Timeless Mario Excellence

Apart from the clunky Wii-era control schemes, there's hardly anything to complain about within this adventure, and its space-set levels provide enjoyment to explore. Although notable titles like Super Mario Odyssey have come after it, Super Mario Galaxy remains one of the best and creative Mario games around.
