Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to US legislators and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

His attorney filed the response on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for several factors including that his the accused, a critic of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was indicted soon after Donald Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative told the judge they intended to present several motions to dismiss the proceedings before a legal hearing, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully designated to take over the legal matter.

The former director's case was first managed by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional political adversary - the New York official - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

The former director came across in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the legal venue on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and making jokes. He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the former government dismissed.

Upon hearing to the judge recite his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was inquired if he grasped the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the court.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about several months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, he was leading an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege the former director lied to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the Senate by claiming he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also allege Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to affect, obstruct and impede" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

In a video the former director shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was not guilty and alleged the former president of behaving like a "autocrat".

"We have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after Trump posted on online platforms calling for his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, prosecute the former director and additional individuals.
