Relinquishing undesired gifts might be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by world leaders during her travels. The eclectic collection could include gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the intention is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.
These gifts are currently kept in a repository on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused over a long period.
The full gift list remains officially released, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was reviewed by officials. The query centered on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.
Notable gifts feature:
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.
This charitable initiative highlights a unconventional way to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a time in office.
