Pre-release events for this upcoming Magic: The Gathering expansion, Lorwyn Eclipsed, will start on January 16. While the complete spoiler season is scheduled to begin on January 5, head designer Maro Rosewater has once again disclosed a comprehensive list of gameplay details before schedule.
Within the many hints, a few stand out. Lorwyn Eclipsed will feature a "permanent that searches every round." This probably refers to a enchantment that allows a player to look through their deck every upkeep for a certain card, possibly with specific restrictions.
This might be an effect as simple as finding a land card each round, or a more powerful such as a search effect that grows based on a creature's power.
He also teased a new piece that duplicates triggered abilities. This is possibly linked to Kirol, Attentive First-Year, a planeswalker that, for the cost of a pair of ready creatures, can replicate a triggered ability once per turn.
A further standout reveal involves rules text that will "counter all instants and sorceries your opponents control." While its phrasing is slightly unclear, it implies an incredibly potent ability capable of addressing multiple spells at once.
This expansion will further include cards that reference "the difference in its power and toughness." With creatures having power/toughness splits like 1/3 or 3/1, this mechanic could become very relevant.
A significant story reveal is a creature with the creature types: "Legendary Creature – Elf Faerie Noble." Given the historic conflict between Elves and the Faerie race on this plane, this combined identity hints at a significant narrative event.
The lead designer also stated the primary eight creature types featured in the set: Elemental, Elf, Faerie, Giant, Goblin, Kithkin, Merfolk, and Treefolk. This reiterates a strong tribal theme for the set.
Toward the end in the rundown, Rosewater mentions "Bark of Doran," likely a nod to Doran, the Siege Tower, suggesting a continued focus on the relationship of attack and toughness.
In addition to these major mechanics, the expansion will feature:
Lastly, the designer hinted at several titles, like Mirrorform, Moonshadow, Gilt-Leaf’s Embrace, and Chaos Spewer. These offer preliminary glimpses into the set's narrative themes and are nods to familiar concepts from the plane's history.
All told, this new set isn't just a homecoming to a beloved setting but also a challenge to see if contemporary Magic is able to embrace the unique weirdness that defined the original Lorwyn sets so special.
