The eagerly awaited knockout match featuring England and the South African team in the Women’s Cricket World Cup is underway in Guwahati. England clinched the toss and chose to field first, aiming to apply early pressure against the South African batting lineup.
NSB brought herself on to replace Bell. No boundaries were conceded, thanks to quick work in the field by Tammy Beaumont near the rope.
The South African opener, who is in fine form, struck two consecutive fours off Smith. A full toss was dispatched to the off-side boundary, and then a loose ball through the covers.
A moment of hesitation almost resulted in Brits her wicket, but the fielding effort from Nat Sciver-Brunt missed the stumps. She then replied by smashing a ball outside off past cover to the boundary. Bell ended the over with a sharp delivery that bounced past the bat.
Linsey Smith bowled a tidy over. Despite the earlier chance, statistics show the English team have the top fielding record in the tournament.
A possible catch went begging. Tazmin Brits struck fiercely a ball back at Lauren Bell, which flew for four runs.
Cloudy skies hovered over Guwahati, and the floodlights in use. Smith appeared more comfortable compared to earlier games yet bowled a loose delivery that Wolvaardt hit hard to the off-side boundary for a boundary.
Lauren Bell started the innings with the new ball. Wolvaardt seized the opportunity, hitting the initial delivery elegantly past cover for four. Another wide delivery was slashed for another boundary. The bowler then tightened her line, yielding only a single off a wide ball.
The playing surface reportedly differs compared to the previous track in the teams' first encounter. It's been called a "red soil pitch", which should offer more bounce and assistance for fast bowlers.
The two sides have experienced mixed performances throughout the tournament. England are seen as the front-runners, however the Proteas are capable to cause an upset. History shows the English side have emerged victorious in both previous semi-final meetings between the sides.
“Brace yourselves, things are about to get intense.” The pressure is on as both teams targeting a place in the final.
