Anti-Trafficking Organizations Warn Financial Suspension Could Enable Forced Labor

A coalition of 74 legal, religious, and advocacy organizations across the nation has raised alarms regarding the withholding of eighty-eight million dollars in public money designated for victims of modern slavery.

Support Systems at Risk

Per a unified message, the DOJ has halted monetary aid for in excess of 100 assistance organizations that help victims leave abusive situations and obtain necessary resources like safe accommodation, mental health support, and guidance.

"Allowing this money to vanish would facilitate modern slavery and threaten lives," the document warns. "Many regions will lose their only service provider, abandoning individuals with nowhere to turn for shelter."

Urgent Request

The alliance is asking lawmakers to encourage the federal government to release the funding to protect numerous victims throughout the US.

This appeal comes after findings that the administration has reduced programs to address human trafficking, though officials reject any withdrawal on human rights policies.

Impact on Communities

  • Numerous support groups lost their financial backing starting the final day of the previous month.
  • Without this funding, survivors may lose access to lifesaving services such as temporary accommodation, counseling, and advocacy.
  • Exploiters could operate with impunity, making communities less safe.

Administration's Position

Regarding concerns over the delayed allocation, the department clarified that public dollars would be distributed in due course, but noted that former beneficiaries wouldn’t necessarily receive funding in the next cycle.

Subsequent funding will be decided based on the leadership's goals, the department commented.

Longstanding Backing

The document additionally points out that lawmakers has repeatedly approved to fund these programs over the last quarter-century, reinforcing the vital necessity of adequately resourcing essential services to assist individuals and avoid repeat victimization.
